Taxis: If you do not wish to make a reservation for the private or shared airport shuttle service in advance, the airport taxi cabs are always available for transportation from the Liberia Airport – 24/7/365. Since airport taxis do not work with prior reservations the rates can be 30 to 40% higher than the private airport shuttle service with even higher prices on peak days like Easter Week, Christmas and New Year’s eve.

 

All airport taxis are small, four door sedans like the one pictured below and not all vehicles are air coditioned. So, if you are traveling with a lot of luggage or if your party consists of 2 or more passengers we highly recommend booking a Liberia Airport private shuttle for comfort and economy.


Liberia Airport Public Transportation Buses:

Another Liberia Airport Transportation option is the public bus system. Buses between the Liberia Airport and Liberia City run on the hour, every hour from 5 AM to 9 PM. Once in Liberia City you can make connections to popular destinations such as Tamarindo, Flamingo, Playa Grande, Playa Conchal and Playa del Coco. The public bus system is, by far, the cheapest option to travel to and from the Liberia Airport. But there are a few things to consider if you would like to use this option:

 

  • Public buses are not air conditioned.
  • Seating is not always guaranteed.
  • Since this is a public service travel time is significantly higher than what you would expect from and airport shuttle or airport taxi (eg: Liberia to Tamarindo 1 hr by airport shuttle or 3.5 hours by public bus).
  • Public buses do not have luggage compartments.
  • Public buses do not drop off at the lobby of your hotel, so for some hotels you will need to walk some distance in order to get to the lobby of your hotel.
  • Knowing how to speak Spanish is highly recommended since connections and times are not always clearly posted at the municipal bus station in Liberia City.

    Shared airport shuttles meet all flights into the Liberia International Airport, but will wait for passengers arriving in your same flight. This usually means about 30 to 40 minutes of waiting at the airport. Take into account that waiting times can vary depending on how busy the airport is and how quickly other shuttle passengers get through customs and immigration. Shared shuttles also make stops at other hotels along the way. But if you don’t mind the waiting this service offers a cheaper alternative to private Liberia Airport shuttles.

     

     

    Liberia Airport Car Rentals:

     

    Renting a car at the Liberia Airport is also possible whether you have a car rental reservation or not. There are car rental representatives for the major car rental companies (Avis, Budget and Economy) at the airport, but for availability reasons it is highly recommended to make a reservation in advance. This is particularly true for the peak and high season months of December, January, February, March and April.
